Ahh I love Korean movies. Though I haven’t watched too many, but recently I did come across some amazing movies which touched my heart, made me cry and made me laugh super hard. One question : Why are Koreans so awesome in everything?
Here’s my list of my favorite Korean movies:
1. My little bride:
After watching so many Korean movies and dramas, I became curious about other Asian languages and cultures so I decided to try a Japanese drama. I browsed through few forum topics in jdorama looking for a good one to start with and found many recommendations for this drama “1 Litre of Tears” & decided to give it a try. Honestly it turned out to be the one of the Best choices ever I made in my life!
The story is based on the real life story of Aya Kitō, a 15-year-old girl diagnosed with Spinocerebellar Degeneration. The disease causes the person to lose control over their body, but because the person can retain all mental ability the disease acts as a prison. So in the end she can’t eat, walk or talk. 1 Litre no Namida (リットルの涙 / Ichi Rittoru no Namida / 1 Litre of Tears / A Diary with Tears / A Diary of Tears) is her diary which she wrote through her struggle with the disease until she passed away when she was 25. She might have started to write the diary just to vent out her pain but slowly it shows how she fights with incredible willpower.
Aya Ikeuchi (played by Erika Sawajiri) ~ a cheerful soon to be high school student, loves to play Basket ball, has lots of friends, a lovely family, secretly has a crush for her senior. Her father runs a tofu shop and her mom works in a health care center. She has 2 younger sisters and a younger brother. The progress in relationships with her siblings & her parents are brilliantly portrayed as the story moves on.
Her life changes slowly due to an illness which slowly affects her walking, slows her reflex actions. One day she misses her school bus stop dozing off and rushes back to school. On the way, she falls down collapsing a long row of bicycles and there she meets the silent & mysterious boy Haruto Aso (played by Ryō Nishikido). He helps with the re arranging and takes her to school. Being in the same class they both become friends slowly.
On a date with her senior (senpai) crush, she falls down drastically and ends up getting admitted in the hospital. Her senpai, a perfect coward gives up on her when he comes to know about her illness. On the other side Haruto whose father is a doctor comes to know about her sickness and still continues being a good friend of her. Their friendship moves to love interest when Haruto rushes to her when she gets stood up by her senpai in the rain. A very powerful scene and don’t miss the song ‘Konayuki’ in the background.
They have a brief love story but the difference in this drama is it doesn’t focus on it. In further days, her sickness gets worse & true colors of life show up. It’s really sad how her very trusted friends turn out helpless and start isolating her. She is left with no option leave the school to shift to a specific one for handicapped ones and undergo her treatment there. The scenes where she accidentally hears her friends complaining about her, then Haruto speaking up for her & helping her out, the final farewell to her school friends are all very touching. The rest of the story is even more sadder when she writes Haruto her first & last love letter and her disabilities with proceeding a normal life.
Some wonderful quotes from the drama which were actually extracts from Aya’s diary [credits : Take a Ride to my Life ]
- I really don’t want to say things such as “I want to go back to how things were before”. I recognize how i am right now, and I will continue to live on.
- Even though I have been hurt before by those heartless glares this also helped me to understand that around me, there still exists some gentle glares. Therefore, I definitely won’t run away. That’s what I’ll do. Definitely. Always.
- The quiet classroom after class; The view outside the window; the wooden floor of the corridors; Talking in home room; I like all these. I’m likely to only cause trouble for people and it might not really do me any good to stay here. Even if it’s like that, I still want to stay here. Because this is the place where I am.
- To be able to smile and tell everyone this; i have, at least, cried one litre of tears. Therefore, even when i leave this school, I definitely won’t think that some things have ended.
- If you look up at the sky after falling down the blue sky is also today stretching limitlessly and smiles at me…I’m alive.
- For those people who are really listening, they will definitely understand.
- People shouldn’t dwell on the past. It’s enough to try your best in all that you’re doing now.
- Reality is too cruel, too brutal. I don’t even have the right to dream. As I think about the future, the tears will come out again.
- Where should I head towards? Even if there isn’t answer, I’ll feel better by writing it down. I’ve looked for a pair of helping hands but I couldn’t feel them, couldn’t see them. I only face towards darkness and hear the sounds of my hopeless screams.
Poems by Ikeuchi Aya from One Litre of Tears:
The Other Side of Suffering
Everyone feels pain
But surely, after suffering satisfaction will arrive
Even with sports; studying or other ordeals with life,
It’s like that for everyone
If we can beat the pain, on the other side
a rainbow of happiness awaits us.
That will definitely become a treasure
Lets believe in that.
Step by Step
When my existence seems to disappear
I will look for the place where I can do the best I can
From now on, I’ll deliberate slowly
I won’t be impatient
I won’t be greedy
I won’t give up
Because everyone takes things step by step
Konayuki ~ A beautiful song from the most beautiful drama ever “1 litre of Tears”…
Whenever I hear this song I can remember Asou Haruto running to help Aya. Sad he was only an imaginary character & did not exist in Aya’s real life !! Such a life changing drama which made me appreciate Life, Family and all the little things in it.There is a movie version of the same and special episodes too which I’m yet to watch..
PS : Be ready with a box of tissues and yes make sure you don’t watch this in a public place or you will be crying at your monitor leaving everyone wondering why
Here I am Back after a long time to share about recent superhit Drama “Secret Garden” starring Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won.At 34, Kim Joo Won (Hyun Bin) is a rich, proud and arrogant CEO of a huge departmental store. Always so full of himself and never settles for any suggestions without his very famous question, “Are you sure this the best you could come up with?” If he had been my CEO I’d really have hated him On the other Side Gil Ra Im (Ha Ji Won) is a simple and poor girl working as a stunt woman. She has great looks and figure by which she often gets mistaken as the main actress. She lives in a small cramped house with her pretty friend Im Ah Young, who is the girlfriend of Kim Joo Won’s secretary Kim Sung Woo. They are a cute & funny couple.
Gil Ra Im is a crazy fan of Oska / Choi Woo Young (Yoon Sang Hyun) who happens to be the not so friendly cousin of our arrogant CEO Kim Joo Won. Oska was a successful singer once upon a time and tries to use the same old fame even after 36. Its very funny whenever he keeps saying “Hey you know I am a Hallyu Star..” and no one recognizes The cousins bickering & fighting over silly things are all super ROFL moments.Yoon Seul (Kim Sa Rang) is a Director, very sophisticated and elegant rich girl, currently the fiancee of Kim Joo Won but once used to be the love interest of Oska during his successful period. They break up over a misunderstanding still are in love with each other but neither of them acknowledges it.Im Jong Soo (Lee Philip) is the Director of the Action School Group where Gil Ra Im works. He is in love with Gil Ra Im one-sidedly but never expresses it. I admire this actor’s English pronunciations. Brilliant! In an effort to clear a scandal of Oska with an actress, Kim Joo Won meets Gil Ra Im mistaking her for the main actress. One thing leading to other they meet up few more occasions and eventually Kim Joo Won starts to admire Gil Ra Im for her amazing stunts & skills. He mocks her for her poverty quite arrogantly. Completely clueless that he has fallen in love with her & keeps wondering why he always keeps thinking of her. So funny to see him always hanging around her action school in his favorite glittering sweatshirts. Poor Guy Gil Ra Im gives him a tough & well deserving counter attack every time and in one such incident they take up a bet and travel to a deep forest. After some dramatic incidents there, the next fine day both their souls get interchanged. Its very funny after the body exchange where Kim Joo Won the great CEO has to live poor girl Gil Ra Im’ s life and Gil Ra Im as a guy. Whatttta scenario.. Man that must be a Nightmare!!
These events bring them both to a better understanding of each other and many more sweet incidents happen. One of the them is The famous ‘Foam Kiss’ in the Coffee shop which works out great for Joo Won & Ra Im but when the poor secretary tries the same with his girl friend Ah Young, haha how it ends up…. I’m not gonna unviel any more here as you all need to actually watch and enjoy them. The story goes in all possible directions seriously I was even little confused initially if I need to continue watching this drama. But the main gluing factor of this drama is the wonderful Chemistry between Kim Joo Won & Gil Ra Im. One of the Best on screen pairs ever. Gotta give it to both Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won for brilliantly portraying such little complex roles so naturally.I enjoyed a lot watching this thanks to the magnetic chemistry & acting of the main pair, the cast, wonderful OSTs (I love the track ‘Bois~Scar’), a refreshing & well written script. A well deserved success! I’ m happy I watched it completely.. Hope you all will like it too
Boys over flowers, K-Drama with 25 episode, is a journey to go along with the characters Geum Jan Di (Goo Hye Sun) – a normal, poor girl with full spark and passion for her dreams and F4 (flowers four) – Gu Jun Pyo (Lee Min Ho); Yoon Ji Hoo (Kim Hyun Joong); So Yi Jeong (Kim Bum); Song Woo Bin (Kim Joon), the filthy rich gang and sweethearts of Shinawa high school.
Story starts with the Shinhwa high school scene, where Jan Di carries Laundry clothes of a Shinhwa student and unexpectedly met a suicide attempt by the guy, for whom she done laundry, was about to throw himself from the top of building. She saved him and become overnight ‘Wonderwomen’ with her bravery. This event turns the wheel of her life to an unimaginable direction and trigger feud with F4. She gets in to the school with ‘Wonderwomen’ status and her swimming skill as add-on.
Jan Di – F4 encounter starts when Jan Di smash ice cream in Jun Pyo’s face and drives him nuts, while other 3 amused by that act. From that incident Jan-Di often got some kind of torment because of Jun-Pyo, but Ji Hoo comes as savior all the time for her. Ji-Hoo posses some extra quality which doesn’t prevail in other F4’s, this drags Jan-Di’s heart towards Ji-Hoo on the go. Yoon Ji Hoo is character that every woman will fall for, no wonder Geum Jan Di falls for him
In Episode 2, Jan-Di was abducted by few fellow students set by Jun-Pyo, right then before something went wrong, Ji-Ho appears and casually clarifying about the pancake recipe is real fun to watch. Another to quote is, when the fun on her went intolerable, she straightly goes to the F4’s lobby and kicking against Jun-Pyo’s face is one of the best and entertaining scenes to watch. OMG… here starts another turn… with one kick Jun-Pyo’s heart starts singing for Jan-Di and he thinks that Jan-Di was infatuated with him. Even some scenes seem so unrealistic, that doesn’t restrict to love this drama.
Some of the notable and sweet scenes everyone will enjoy are of Jun Pyo -Jan Di- Ji Hoo triangle love, and in later part Kim Bum-Ga Eul combination. Ever wondered??How heaven look like?? See the places Jeju Island, New Caledonia and Macau which appears in this drama… real eye candy to watch.
On the go, this drama hijacks your heart and brain totally with expectations of ‘what’s next’. “Life is not a cake walk. Making our dream into reality is not an easy task. The path will be full of ups and downs, but when you are focused, struggles are the way to destiny.” This is the message the whole drama gives for the viewers with appealing twist and turns. So why waiting… take a journey with these amazing characters
This super hit SBS drama, aired between 2010-Aug-11 to 2010-Sep-30, has been the talk of the year! One of the most successful dramas, My girlfriend is a gumiho (Gumiho means a nine tailed fox) aka Nae Yeojachinguneun Gumiho, shot the lead actors to overnight fame.
Although, the actor Lee Seung gi was already well known for his singing and acting skills, the pretty actress Shin Min ah, has been put into the limelight for an amazing portrayal of Miss Gu Mi Ho.
The story is a romantic comedy fantasy, where a particularly lazy and careless boy Cha Dae Woong, accidentally meets MiHo, a gumiho, after he draws nine tails on an old painting, which releases her from it, into the human world.
Dae Woong (Later lovingly called Woong-ah) falls off a hill which severely injures him leading towards death. But to repay for releasing her, GuMiho (Later called Miho-ya) gives Woong her precious fox bead. This restores his life and thus she saves him.
In order to protect the bead, she needs to constantly stay beside it, and hence stay beside Dae Woong. During this time, he can’t ‘mate’ with any other woman, haha, that’s a funny way to put it, but yeah that’s how it is
Woong, in the beginning, considers her a burden, as she eats a LOT of beef and other meat. Haha But the story goes for a twist when…you guessed it right, they fall in love with each other.
Also, one of my favorite reasons for watching this show, a character called “Park Dong Joo” played by the beautiful, gorgeous, hot, tall guy (give me one minute to drool) No Min Woo! His emo character gives him an edge. Everytime he comes on screen, a song TRAP sung by him, plays in the background, be sure to check it out. No Min Woo has a great sense of camera angles. Park Dong joo speaks in a calm tone which makes him so mysterious. He wants to catch Miho, or maybe not? Ha, I won’t kill the suspense, but he does own a knife which can kill Miho and make her disappear.
Eun Hae In, Dae Woong’s senior, is in love with Woong (that’s what she thinks) but she doesn’t really LOVE him. She always gets in the way of MiHo and Woong’s love story but honestly, she’s the one who takes the story forward.
I love how this show breaks stereotypes. The hero is wimpy and the heroine is physically strong. She drinks beer and doesn’t hesitate to say that she likes someone out loud, even in the middle of a road with tons of people around. Now that’s cool!
There’s an amusing subplot of Woong’s aunt Min Sook and the director Ban, who are in their own world of love. They do some real silly random stuff which can either gross you out or make you laugh. They provide a much needed comic relief in the show.
The beautiful song played during romantic moments is Fox Rain, which definitely brings a mood in the show. Losing my mind, I will love you from now on, are some great songs sung by Seung Gi!
This drama totally blew my mind in terms of great dialogues, good direction and fab acting. The funny moments are awesome and Lee Seung Gi is an amazing actor!! If you haven’t watched it yet, go watch it, ‘cause it’s so worth it! Hoi Hoi!
