Answer Me / Reply 1997 – Review

29 Jul

Finally I met this show ‘Answer Me/Reply 1997’ which pushed me to write after a long break. Among so many mediocre or the same recipe dished again kind of shows, this was just the exact fresh breath needed in Korean dramas. It was not quite popular when it started airing since being a cable show but hell yeah it broke many records & ended up with highest ratings ever among cable shows.

The cast – pretty much a bunch of rookies and not so famous actors but none fell short when it comes to their performance levels; Not even the any of the many short cameos. There is no such casual characters in this show; Every minute characters are very well webbed into the story.

Story centers around a gang of six friends from a high school in Busan meeting in 2012 for a reunion:

Jung Eun Ji as Sung Shi WonA die hard H.O.T. in to be specific Tony An fan girl in the show. Practically her life revolves around H.O.T and their schedules, shows & broadcasts; Loud, Expressive & crazy fan girl!

Seo In Guk as Yoon Yoon JeShi Won’s friend since child hood and almost like a family; The ideal son any parent would dream for; Studious and bold yet when it comes to Shi Won he becomes her puppy; Loves her since high school yet has problems in expressing it to her.

Shin So Yool as Mo Yoo Jung – Once a H.O.T fangirl and then shifted to Sech Kies fandom. Has a crush on Yoon Jae which he never acknowledges. Later finds true love in an unexpected situation.

Eun Ji Won as Do Hak ChanEun Ji Won was actually the leader of Sech Kies. Hak Chan is a hero among guys. But totally shy around girls thanks to all the porn knowledge.

Hoya as Kang Joon HeeThe most silent yet understanding friend in the gang; Has a crush on his friend which he shares with Shi Won later; Surprisingly awesome dancer. Well Infinite afterall!

Lee Shi Un as Bang Sung JaeOne of the loudest and boldest among the friends. First he appears to be a very shallow person but has a kind heart and helping tendency which he makes his career later.

A high school reunion in 2012 takes us through many phases of their lives predominantly from the 1997. The dynamics in their relationships among friends and their families. The show’s success for me is the way the relationships are expressed. Very real no dramatics no gimmicks & no stunts. Just the regular conversations & situations touched in very beautiful ways that make us connect with them very easily.

Be it a long long time friend suddenly becoming more than just a friend (this scene gave me goosebumps)

Another beautiful portrayal is the relationship between Shi Won & her parents. Not only made me tear up many times but also cracked me up like crazy too. I’d say this is so far the most realistic portrayal of parent – kid relationship.

Many references to the South Korea’s famous idol bands of the 90s H.O.T and Sech Kies involved. So doing a little background study of them would definitely help.

One warm movie to watch.. 🙂

Sunny! Wow this film is absolutely one of my all time favorites. This is the kind of film which will make you laugh and cry. It will definitely remind you of the fun times you had during your middle school/high school years.

The story revolves around new high-school transfer student Im Na-Mi, who comes from a small town in Jeolla-do to a new school in Seoul. On her first day at her new school she is bullied by others girls. But some girls are really nice to her and help her. The girls are Ha Chun-Hwa, known for her strong sense of loyalty & excellent fighting skills,  Jang-Mi  who really wishes to get double eye-lid surgery, Jin-Hee  who swears like a sailor, Geum-Ok who is interested in literature, Bok-Hee  dreams of becoming Miss Korea someday and Su-Ji  who is always arrogant and talks very less. Na-Mi quickly becomes part of…

A great list of must watch Korean movies!!

Ahh I love Korean movies. Though I haven’t watched too many, but recently I did come across some amazing movies which touched my heart, made me cry and made me laugh super hard. One question : Why are Koreans so awesome in everything? 😉

Here’s my list of my favorite  Korean movies:

1. My little bride:

I LOVE Kim Rae Won and Moon Geun Young is pretty awesome too. This story of a 25 year old guy getting married to a 15 year old girl can sound like it’s a lil weird (considering morals and all) but the treatment given to this film is so sweet and endearing that we will fall in love with the young couple. Age doesn’t really matter in true love. I will never get tired of this film and the sweetness that exudes just warms my heart 🙂

Boys Over Flowers : The Awesome Kdrama! Wow. I’m in love with this one. When I started watching this show I wasn’t much interested in it (probably because the first scene of bullying turned me off, when I was expecting a romantic drama). And now I’m hooked. I’m still on  episode 21, but I couldn’t wait to write this post. Let me tell you, this is gonna have some spoilers!! 😉 [caption id … Read More

Super Junior - The Super Amazing Group Super Junior ! If you love kpop, and you don’t know SuJu, then you probably live under a rock. They are one of Asia’s biggest bands and world famous too. One of my friends mentioned a tweet about their song ‘Bonamana’. Being pretty curious, I hopped onto YouTube and saw their music video. And oh my God, I loved it! That’s when my Korean addiction (which has now turned into an obsession hehe ;)) started. They have a huge fanclub (fandom, actually) … Read More

Review: My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho

12 Jan

This super hit SBS drama, aired between 2010-Aug-11 to 2010-Sep-30, has been the talk of the year! One of the most successful dramas, My girlfriend is a gumiho (Gumiho means a nine tailed fox) aka Nae Yeojachinguneun Gumiho, shot the lead actors to overnight fame.

Although, the actor Lee Seung gi was already well known for his singing and acting skills, the pretty actress Shin Min ah, has been put into the limelight for an amazing portrayal of Miss Gu Mi Ho.

The story is a romantic comedy fantasy, where a particularly lazy and careless boy Cha Dae Woong, accidentally meets MiHo, a gumiho, after he draws nine tails on an old painting, which releases her from it, into the human world.

Dae Woong (Later lovingly called Woong-ah) falls off a hill which severely injures him leading towards death.  But to repay for releasing her, GuMiho (Later called Miho-ya) gives Woong her precious fox bead. This restores his life and thus she saves him.

In order to protect the bead, she needs to constantly stay beside it, and hence stay beside Dae Woong. During this time, he can’t ‘mate’ with any other woman, haha, that’s a funny way to put it, but yeah that’s how it is 😉

Woong, in the beginning, considers her a burden, as she eats a LOT of beef and other meat. Haha But the story goes for a twist when…you guessed it right, they fall in love with each other.

Also, one of my favorite reasons for watching this show, a character called “Park Dong Joo” played by the beautiful, gorgeous, hot, tall guy (give me one minute to drool) No Min Woo! 🙂 His emo character gives him an edge. Everytime he comes on screen, a song TRAP sung by him, plays in the background, be sure to check it out. No Min Woo has a great sense of camera angles. Park Dong joo speaks in a calm tone which makes him so mysterious. He wants to catch Miho, or maybe not? Ha, I won’t kill the suspense, but he does own a knife which can kill Miho and make her disappear.

Eun Hae In, Dae Woong’s senior, is in love with Woong (that’s what she thinks) but she doesn’t really LOVE him. She always gets in the way of MiHo and Woong’s love story but honestly, she’s the one who takes the story forward.

I love how this show breaks stereotypes. The hero is wimpy and the heroine is  physically strong. She drinks beer and doesn’t hesitate to say that she likes someone out loud, even in the middle of a road with tons of people around. Now that’s cool!

There’s an amusing subplot of Woong’s aunt Min Sook and the director Ban, who are in their own world of love. They do some real silly random stuff which can either gross you out or make you laugh. They provide a much needed comic relief in the show.

The beautiful song played during romantic moments is Fox Rain, which definitely brings a mood in the show. Losing my mind, I will love you from now on, are some great songs sung by Seung Gi!

This drama totally blew my mind in terms of great dialogues, good direction and fab acting. The funny moments are awesome and Lee Seung Gi is an amazing actor!! If you haven’t watched it yet, go watch it, ‘cause it’s so worth it! 😉 Hoi Hoi!
